With regards to personal expenses while in Chile outside the ranch, Chilean Pesos are the preferred method of payment. Cash, or cash in conjunction with a small amount of travelers checks is another good option. With regards to which type of money, and how much—please bring what you are comfortable with, and the list below should help.
Please call your bank and credit card companies and let them know that you will be in Chile so that they won’t freeze your account when you use your card. Credit Cards are accepted only at larger hotels. Smaller places do often accept credit cards, but charge a fee.
- Traveling Money: Travelers may change dollars to Chilean Pesos in Santiago although it is not expected that you will need much walking around money at the ranch. For people traveling to Easter Island and spend the night in Santiago, may wish to exchange some money for additional purchases they wish to make.
- Tipping: Is always entirely up to you, and most participants generally tip $150-$200 USD total to the ranch staff. We have a mixture of staff including your guide, cooks, cook assistants and ranch hands. In Chilean restaurants, gratuity is usually not included and tipping 10% is normal. Taxis do not expect tips although it is usual to not request small amounts of change.
