Bhutan is the last Mahayana Buddhist kingdom in the world. The lush green valleys, virgin forests, clear fast flowing rivers and an enthralling landscape make Bhutan an unforgetable experience. The Kingdom has some of the most famous sites in the world for Buddhist pilgrims.

This itinerary is a wonderful blend of trekking through ancient lands, beautiful scenery and visits to cultural sites.  After exploring Paro, we travel to Drukgyel Dzong the starting location of our trek.  The trail passes through scattered hamlets and farmland into a deep and richly forested valley, which leads to a high alpine pastureland where yak herders graze their animals. The trek offers a a great variety of the landscapes in this remote part of the world.

After the trek we visit Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan.  Here we visit a number of historical sites and experience more of the traditions of this amazing country.

Below is a brief summary of the itinerary and more information is available by clicking here or 'Detailed Itinerary' in the Trip Details menu on the right side of this page.

Gokyo and Everest Trek Itinerary Summary

Days 1-2  Depart your home country and begin international flight(s) with scheduled layover based upon itinerary.  Arrive Bangkok Thailand and overnight at hotel.

Days 3  Depart Bangkok for Paro Bhutan.  You will be greeted by our staff and taken to your initial accommodations for checkin and lunch.  Visit cultural stops within Paro.  The group enjoys a welcome dinner in the evening.

Day 4  We depart Paro for Drukgyel Dzong, the beginning point of our trek. Today we pass through rice terraces, fields of millet, apple orchards and forests.

Day 5  Today's trail is a little more challenging with reasonable altitude gain.  Our trail follows the Pa Chu (Paro River) and passes through pine, oak, spruce, and rhodedendron forests.  We lunch alongside the river before continuing on to our camp at Thangthangkha.

Day 6  From Thangthangkha we enjoy views of Jhomolhari (7314 m), a picturesque himalayan mountain.  As we depart camp, we travel through forests, then hike above the treeline overlooking the river below arriving at our camp at Jangothang (4044 m).  At camp we also enjoy views of Jichu Drake (6850 m).

Day 7  Today we hike along ridges, valley floors, enjoying breathtaking views of the Himalayas as cross over the Nyile La Pass (4890 m). Descend to camp at Lingshi with views of mountains and Lingshi Dzong.

Day 8  We hike up to a ridge before turning south along the Mo Chu Valley.  After crossing the river we climb again to cross over Yelela Pass (4820 m).  We descend to our camp at Shodu.

Day 9  Having dipped below the treeline we continue our journey passing through rhodedendron, juniper and mixed alpine forests.  We pass waterfalls and other beautiful scenery before arriving near the ruins of Barshong Dzong where we will camp for the night.

Day 10  After passing though dense forests of rhodedendron, birch, and conifers, the trail meets the Thimphu Chu.  The trail climbs as we round a cliff face high above the Thimphu Chu before opening into pastureland and our camp at Dolam Kencho.

Day 11  Today the trail winds along the river, descending rapidly, following the road south to Dodena. Our transportation will be waiting for us to take us to our hotel in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan.

Day 12  Today we visit several cultural sites in the Thimphu valley such as a Memorial Choeten, Changangkha Lhakhang, Sangaygang (lover's point), Dupthob Lhakhang (a nummery), Wangditse Lhakhang as well as views of the Tashichoedzong (Fortress) and the Parliament building.  We drive to Paro and checkin to our hotel.

Days 13  Our last full day in Bhutan is spent on a memorable journey to the Taktshang Monastery, known as the Tiger's Nest and one of Bhutan's most sacred places.  Pirched high on a ledge.  Once back at the hotel, we all gather together for our farewell dinner while we enjoy reflecting about our journey, experiences and the wonderful people we have met along the way.

Days 14-15  Having come to the end of our time in Bhutan, everyone is brought back to the Paro International airport for their international flight back to Bangkok Thailand.  From there, clients connect to their international flights home or may elect to extend their trip with time in Bangkok or other destinations as they desire.
